This comes pretty darned close to being the ideal jobsite saw.

Heading the list of features we love is the great miter detent override, allowing you to compensate for a world that just isn't square all the time. Normally, you'd have a fight on your hands with regular detents because of that annoying tendency saws have to snap into the detent when you get too close. But built into the cam lock miter handle is a detent override, and you can cut as close to a detent as you need to without slipping in. It miters from 0 to 50 degrees both right and left, and of course, there are the 11 positive stops you expect, and all dead-on accurate. The cam lever is a great improvement over the turnscrew knob on the miter arm, too.

The tall sliding fence has a machined support that promises nothing but the ultimate accuracy. We like the extra height because it supports crown molding beautifully, even up to 6-5/8 inches nested and base molding up to 6-1/2 inches vertically. Need a bevel cut? The fence slides neatly out of the way for bevels, anywhere from 0 to 48 degrees both left and right. (If you're in the market for this much power but just a single bevel, check out the DeWalt 715 saw. If you want all this, a bag of chips and a slider, step up to the DW718.) There are absolutely no complaints from this motor no matter what you're cross-cutting, as it's drawing 15 beefy amps and has a max rpm of 3,600, slicing through 2-by oak like it's paper. What we found impressive is the saw's ability to crosscut a 2-by-10 just by adding an auxiliary base to bring the stock up to level with the back fence.

If portability is a factor, there are few saws that rival this one, we think: It's just 44 pounds despite its brawny power, and a smart designer incorporated easy-on-the-body handles into the base that offer a nice, wide, secure grip. Though it's well-enough suited to the home workshop, this saw is at home at the jobsite.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

5 out of 5 stars Good Saw, Good Service by Amazon   January 12, 2008

I purchased this saw to crosscut 2x4's while building some shelves and then to begin some trim projects in the house. I am by no means a pro, but this saw has worked great for me and what I have been working on. On a customer service note, this unit is the second saw that Amazon shipped to me. The first one started smoking after 10 cuts and I quit running it. I was upset - this is the biggest on-line purchase that I have made, but Amazon was fantastic. After an email to them that evening, I had a replacement saw on my doorstep in two days. I printed their labels and dropped the defective saw off at the post office for return. Thanks Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing wrong with reconditioned   August 23, 2007

Seems to work great. I don't use it for a lot of heavy duty stuff, but for what I have used it for, I can't find any problems. Only negative might be the dust catcher (it doesn't seem to work very well) but I haven't ever seen one that does, so I still give it 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, power in a bundle   February 3, 2007

I needed a mitre saw that would help me grow as a woodworker. I have a small shop and the majority of my tools are reconditioned. My wallet cannot afford the high end stuff new on the market. When I saw the DW716 on sale as a reconditioned tool, I knew I had to have one. Prior to my purchase of the DW716, I used an underpowered mitre that damaged alot of wood. The cuts were never the same because the saw would not hold its measurements. Simply, woodworking projects became a chore.
When the DW716 was delivered, I cracked opened the box and completed the necessary start up do' and don'ts. I had a project ready at hand, and I was off and running. I needed to hang a storm door on my house. Prior to adhering the door, I needed to build the molding and trim around the exterior of the door. Using the DW716, the chore had ended. There was enough power for the mitre to cut pieces of wood to form without fighting. The ends matched. Wow. A must have. Thanks to Amazon, my wookshop would be much smaller without it.

4 out of 5 stars honey for the money!   January 21, 2007

I have been very pleased with this saw. I really like that it bevels both ways, which is handy for crown molding. My only complaint is that the description says you can cut up to 2x8s. You can, but not with out removing the fence, and screwing a 1 1/2" piece of wood to the saw. But all in all I am very happy with the saw, especially at the reconditioned price.
